Looking back, I’ve got to say the landlord and agent were actually solid to deal with. This one wasn’t really on them. The issue came from next door. The neighbours renovated and installed a wood fire, and whenever there was a westerly wind, the smoke would drift straight into the flat. The flue was only about two metres from our balcony, so the whole apartment would start to smell like smoke.
It’s an older building, so even though they’d put in some newer windows, it didn’t really help. The smoke still got in. We raised it with the council at the time, but apparently it was all within the rules, so nothing could be done. It was frustrating, but not something the landlord or agent could control. Just a tough situation all round.
