Not long after moving in, I noticed a leak in the second bedroom. I followed the process outlined in the lease and sent an urgent email and followed up with a call. Eventually a plumber came out and told me it was probably caused by the upstairs laundry, as it had leaked before. That turned out to be wrong. I pushed for a second opinion and when I kept questioning the first plumber he became aggressive.
It was eventually discovered the source was the upstairs bathtub. Waste water was leaking down into my room. Over many months the situation went from bad to worse. Water started gushing through a hole they’d cut in the ceiling to access the pipes. My belongings were damaged despite doing my best to move them in such a small space. The leaking water and mould made both me and my pets sick.
Even while the room was unusable I was still expected to pay full rent. When I moved out they withheld my bond, claiming the carpet wasn’t clean even though it had been soaked with wastewater and plaster from the ceiling. They even pointed to a photo of some pet hair as proof.
I ended up taking it to VCAT, which ordered them to finish repairs within two weeks. They didn’t. I had nothing left in me physically or mentally so I broke the lease. They told me I should feel lucky they “allowed” it.
