The property was left vacant for five months before I moved in, windows open and not cleaned. I had to professionally clean it myself. The building has long standing issues that were never properly addressed.
There was extensive black mould throughout. Kitchen cupboards leaked, were collapsing and filthy, and one opened into the hot water space, encouraging cockroach infestations. The lino was loose over a dirty floor and the kitchen was grease coated with a broken exhaust fan. Carpets lifted when vacuumed and showed clear signs of rising damp. Storage and wardrobes had water damage and shed sawdust onto belongings.
The bathroom was in extremely poor condition. Rusted fixtures, mould, disintegrating windowsills and cabinetry, a sink pulling off the wall and no exhaust fan. Windows could not be locked and screens were flimsy. Tiles were chipped and gaps taped over. Paint was flaky and applied over old wallpaper.
Security was inadequate. The front door was an internal door with only a basic handle lock. The apartment was trespassed and despite a police report it was not properly fixed. A tenant upstairs intimidated vulnerable residents and complaints were ignored. Urgent repairs such as installing a fixed heater took months. After pushing for repairs for almost a year, the rent was increased and my tenancy ended so the property could be sold. Renters should be extremely cautious.
