The property had serious maintenance and safety issues. Only three of the eight windows opened, none had screens or locks, and several were rotten or had broken glass. With no screens on the doors, animals and pests could enter the house, including dogs that entered and attacked the tenant and their elderly cat. The kitchen was extremely old and deteriorated, with cockroaches and spiders regularly emerging from behind cupboards and entering light fittings. Animals were also living inside the walls and roof. The stove was installed inside an unsealed chimney, allowing pests and debris to fall into food while cooking. The foundations shifted on multiple occasions while the tenant was showering, causing falls and injuries. Floors dropped, tiles and walls cracked, verandah boards were rotten and gave way, and the back door had a poorly fitted lock. After being locked out, the property manager did not assist and the tenant was injured climbing through a window. Repairs were rarely completed and the property felt unsafe throughout.
