The landlord was truly awful and repeatedly broke the law. No gas or electrical safety checks had been done for over ten years, and there was no working smoke alarm when we moved in. The toilet flooded constantly, and she refused to fix it. When a pipe burst and holes were cut in the bathroom wall to access it, she left them unrepaired for months. The property was advertised with a dishwasher that broke soon after moving in — she refused to replace it and told us to find somewhere else to live. The situation became so bad that the rental agency cut ties with her, forcing her to self-manage. She was rude, uncooperative, and tried to claim she didn’t need to follow the lease agreement. We had to take her to the magistrates court, where she was ordered to pay compensation. She mailed the cheque stapled to an eviction notice. We were paying 00 a week; she has since re-listed it for 50. The worst landlord experience imaginable.
