This one was pretty heartbreaking. The house itself was actually quite suitable for my mum, who has a disability, and we really thought it could be a good long-term fit. The property was leased to a disability support provider, and we signed on under a rooming accommodation agreement. Before signing, we’d talked with them about a couple of minor modifications specifically, installing a grab rail in the shower as recommended by her occupational therapist.
But once we moved in and tried to get it done, the owner refused to give permission. Even though they acknowledged in writing that the small drill hole for the rail could be sealed properly later, they still wouldn’t approve it. There was no workaround. The disability company hadn’t written this into their lease with the owner, and because of the type of agreement, there was no support from the RTA or NDIS to push it through.
In hindsight, I should have insisted that it be written in before signing, but I honestly thought we were on the same page. What ended up happening is my mum had to move again at her own cost because she couldn’t safely stay in a place without basic support like a grab rail. It just feels like the system protects everyone but the person who actually needs the help.
