Looking back, it was probably the worst place I’ve ever rented. It was barely liveable. Cramped, infested with fleas, and the whole place stank of cat poo. The layout was ridiculous. The laundry had been turned into a bedroom, and the tiny living room was sectioned off to make another one. The walls were just plywood with exposed screws and wallpaper peeling off.
The landlord was a nightmare. She came over whenever she felt like it, and when we reported a flea problem, she threatened to sue us for slander. Instead of hiring proper cleaners, she got tenants from another property she owned to do it for a rent discount.
Any time something broke, she’d ask us to fix it and said she’d reimburse the cost of materials. But if you questioned any of it, she’d turn around and ask you to leave. And she’d keep the bond, which was never even lodged through RTBA.
The place clearly targeted students who didn’t know their rights, especially with how close it was to Melbourne Uni.
