Thinking back on this rental, the problems never seemed to end. The bathroom and storage were stuck under the house like an old outhouse, and the basement level flooded several times, leaving mould on our clothes and furniture and damp climbing the walls upstairs. Rain also leaked straight through the living room ceiling and even light fittings, which the agent ignored despite us reporting it repeatedly. The shower had no proper drain, just a pit under the tub, so it constantly smelled and filled with insects. The toilet line clogged often with tree roots, leaving us without a working loo for days while waiting on plumbers.
Upstairs, gaps in the boards let cockroaches crawl into every room I woke up with them on me more than once. The agency dismissed it, telling us to set off bombs rather than fix the entry points. The place hadn’t been properly cleaned before we moved in, and at the end they forced us to pay for a ‘re-clean’ even though we used their recommended company. The owner always claimed they couldn’t afford repairs, but still wanted to pop in to do odd jobs over Christmas. The house could have been charming, but in reality it was unhealthy, unsafe, and poorly managed.
